Great to find this forum. I love the topics. The articles posted at the following link are very helpful regarding inbreeding vs. outcrossing. www.netpets.com/dogs/reference/genetics.html To me, the gist of it is that inbreeding allows a breeder to fix certain traits and "stamp" their line with dogs that breed true to type. Outcrossing and genetic diversity lead to better health and longevity but likely greater differences in type. To me outcrossing is the obvious choice the majority of the time with an occasional well thought out line breeding if needed. Our goal is to produce great working, athletic, healthy, long-lived Weims that meet the breed standard. If they all look a little different that's OK. As far as a pedigree program goes the one I use requires manual entry of the pedigrees. But once they are entered it can generate COI and more for any dog or prospective mating. Its a free program you can download at www.geocities.com/willowind_dals/pedigree.html. Anne www.regenweimaraners.com

Hi Anne and Aktyson! Thanks for posting those links They will make interesting reading Line breeding and inbreeding are really the same thing, but people tend to use "inbreeding" if they don't like the method and some people use the term inbreeding when the % is higher then what they feel is healthy. For example matings between father /daughter. I forgot to mention that if one of the common ancestors is "inbred" the % of relation between the individuals increases. If you want I can post an example?

Hello Anne and Ingvild! Nice to meet the two of you here. What a very small world! Invild posted that the maximum inbreeding in Norway is 12.5%. That may sound low to some but it is the equivalent of a 1/2 brother-sister mating. Certainly not something many would recommend in humans. Anne Tyson www.regenweimaraners.com

CanGen is the list I was refering to. I basically lurk, trying to pick stuff up as it goes. The 12.5 would only be that for half siblings if none of the three parents involved were related. The programmes that work out the COI work properly with the most possible pedigrees in it. It would be great to have a huge computer thing, for people to send as many pedigrees as possible from all over the world and THEN we'd have a real COI! Wendy

Personally I don't breed although my family breeds great danes but I am considering having a litter with my bitch because I would like a bitch from her for my own use and if I cannot find a litter that I want from the UK then I'm looking to find a stud abroad, I am waiting for my dog to come along but if a litter that I am not 100% happy with is bred then I will be looking to import a dog from German or further afield if this is not possible later on.
I've done my homework regarding my own dog I know her pedigree going back more generations than I care to count but certainly back to the first imports into the states and the first imports into the uk for the whole of her pedigree. I have the benefit of having a breeder who has numerous combinations that I can look at and can see in the flesh as well as track their medical history, some combinations definitely work and some have proven to be lacking in the qualities that I am looking for.
Personally I would be looking to do an outcross to a line that has a strong hunting drive and much lighter colour because bonnie is slightly too dark but she has a lovely head that I like and nice bone and shape. My biggest problem is finding a dog in the uk that I actually like and want to use... few have truely proven working abilities and those that do have been used profusely so I want to avoid that because I know of health concerns that I do not want my bitches progeny to carry.
In the Uk the dogs that have done the best in field trials etc have all been bitches.
