Hi, I live in Perth, Western Australia & am addicted to Weimaraners! I got my first one last year. Her name is Busta Lovena & is a short coat Grey girl I plan to get another soon, a Male Long Coat & can't wait. My girl is now 20 months old & I am unsure when it will be a good time to get my second There is a chance I can get a 5 month old male now or wait another 5 months to get a 8 week old pup. I'm into Tracking & Obedience with my Wei. I look forward to chatting to u all. Cheers Heidi

Hello Heidi, Welcome from Poland, from me and my two weims - girl and a boy We took our second weim (boy), when Cisa (my first one, a girl) was 15 months old....she accepted him without any problems and now they love each other incredible ;D Cisa is 22 months old now and Fritz is 9,5 months old...they live in amazing harmony and I can't imagine life without TWO weimaraners around me now...it's absolutely better quality ;D Best wishes, Ania ps. And I also think that 5 month old puppy is in the perfect age to socialize with older dog....not so difficult like 8 week old pup and in this age you can already start to work a bit with him. Also 5 month old pup is not making so much mess around him already A.

Welcome to the board Heidi and Busta Lovena! It is nice to have you join us.
Just my own observations here, little puppies are cute, but an awful lot of work and trouble getting them to the age you really start to work with them. To me, 5 months is just about the perfect age, old enough to bypass the little puppy problems, but still young enough to bond quickly, learn from the older dog, stand up to rough play(don't have to worry about little guys getting injured)--and old enough to start serious obedience and working training. I'd lean heavily toward the 5 month old--and not only that, you'd avoid a lot of expense with puppy shots that just have to be repeated when they get to be 16 weeks old anyway.

Hello Heidi and welcome! Personally, I prefer to have them at 8 weeks. Most studies done with puppies show that in terms of imprinting, the critical age is 8-12 weeks. The dog will of course socialize very well also after this age but in terms of imprinting the younger the better. I don´t understand why people wait until 5 months before starting training, personally I think the dog is kind of old if you start then. I start training the moment they come home and I think the dogs learning capability is superb at a young age. Of course the training is associated with a lot of playing but you can really teach your dog a lot of things from 8 weeks on and most importantly, the dog grows up with a sense of work. Personally, I also love the puppy age I don´t care if it is a lot of work and mess, I think the puppy age is very valuable. Now I don´t mean that is bad to take a 5 month old but if I was to choose, I would go for the 8 week puppy

Thanks for the greeting & advice guys Emma I agree with what u have said. I started training at 8 weeks with my girl around the home & at 4 months we were doing Tracking. Wetdog you have made me feel confident that getting a pup at 5 months can be done successfully & you have pointed out the pro's. graham Hi Graham, Its great to see another Aussie on here...I was born in Sydney. fenomena Cisa & Fritz sound like great buddies & I can't wait to have two Wei's just like you to watch them bond. I will miss being able to pick up a tiny pup & carry it around but I just can't wait the 6 months to do so. So we have dicided to get the 5 month old pup. YIPEEE!!!

Hey Heidi, welcome here from me and my 4 LH's (two of them are 5.5 months now and yes, it can be done quite easily, but only if they've been socialised and trained properly).

Hi Marjolein Wow! Two at 5 months old hey & 4 in total! So what can u tell me about Long Hairs? Are they more laid back than short hairs (I've been told they are)? Do they need lots of grooming? Here is my boy to be......"CASH"!

I have been told they're more laid back too Heidi and from what I've seen, it's correct. Having 4 is not a problem at all, even two pups is not too much work really. It's only temporary though, one of the pups goes back to England, where her dad lives. I'm dreading the day she has to go..... Grooming, no, they don't need much grooming. I usually brush them a couple of times a week, but I'm sure their coats looks fine too when I only do it once every 2 weeks. They're lovely Heidi, I bet you can't wait!!!!

I don't think Emma and I entirely disagree---just that she considers puppy play training and I don't really disagree, it is to certain extent--however, with small puppies like that you cann't expect the attention span and consistent response that you would expect from an older dog. The training I am refering to is more structured and you should be expecting a more mature response.
Cash is a good looking guy and still young and moldable--I think you are making a good choice.

Hi narelle, Yes I am on DOL now & than I emailed GreyDove just last week regarding if u had any long hair litters coming up. I love ur website by the way! Hey Heidi, no we don't breed longhairs. We only ever bred the one litter purposefully to get a longhair from two carriers we had but unfortunately her mouth went and that was the end of that. Narelle
