I notice that no one has mentioned ear length. I know there is a difference between the standards, the UK standard calls for ears to end approximately 2.5 cms (1 in) from point of nose. Whereas, I recall, the AKC and CKC standards call for ears which end approximately 2 inches from the point of the nose. What is it for the FCI??
For me, without the ear length coming to the one inch from point of nose, it can have the the best head properties, eyes, pigment et al in the world but if it's got short ears this really detracts!

I was going to mention ear lenght, honest!
FCI: Lobular, broad and fairly long, just reaching to corner of mouth. Set on high and narrow, forming a rounded off point at tip. In alterness , turned slightly forward, folded.
Wow, quite a difference in the KC and AKC standards.
I also like them better long than short!
According to the FCI standard, that looks pretty short, I just had to fold the tip of Audry's ear up to see what "correct" ear looks like according to the FCI standard.

I've got one of those. We always joke that we should hang weights off his ears! Poor boy. He has a nice head but his ears are terrible. Fortunately his puppies take after mom. Hoping that it's an easy feature to fix!!

I think it's about what you're used to. I prefer Weims with shorter ears, b/c that's what I'm used to.

Dear Irena. I am sorry for my english But you was absolutely right - I mean squore ;D What on earth is QUADRATIC? Narelle Narelle, may I remind you that ours being an international board and covering most European countries, by far not ALL people's native language is English, and not everyone has the time to sit down with a dictionary. But of course everyone is always entitled to politely enquire what someone means. I believe Simona means " square".

Yep, we've had one of those too! She was a complete sweetheart and I absolutely adored her.......but boy, when all our dogs were sitting on the sofa, you'd look along the line and think gosh, they're all so lovely/handsome/pretty and then I would get to the end of the line and look at her head with those short ears.....LOL. We too used to joke about adding weights to her ears. Awww........

Now that is interesting. Here we have our standard 'based' on the FCI one, (I say based, but I thought it WAS the FCI standard) yet our ears are supposed to be within an inch of the end of the nose. I have only seen one with short ears, and it looked VERY strange! Wendy

There is 'talk' in one of the dog papers here, that the FCI is in meetings with other KCs to try and get us all to have the same breed standards.

Personally I would prefer a head to be heavier than lighter or snipy with no lip. Large pendulous lips are ugly but probably more correct for a working dog than none at all! It is important to look for strength of under jaw and a large nose - both important in a functional hunting dog.
When I judge Weimaraners in the show ring I like to see masculine heads on the dogs and feminine heads on the bitches and would penalize too finer head in either sex. I find Weis that lack the distinctive 'chiseling' beneath the eye end up with a rather 'plain' head. I think the stop should be distinct and a dog lacking in stop is rather plain. Then again you don't want a head like a pointer. You don't want a 'down face' either - this is where the line from end of nose to stop is not parallel to the line from the top of the stop to the occiput. All this being said, I don't consider this a headed breed and as long as the head is reasonable I would never put it down to a dog of lesser quality comformation-wise. Lois

Lois, thanks so much for the input.
I have a question though (also to all, of course), not sure how to put it but I'll try. I've just been thinking, it's not ONLY lips that make a head look 'heavier', is that right? I mean, if we take a snipey muzzle and add more lip, that still wouldn't make the muzzle "stronger", or would it?
And another question I have, is about the "bump" on the bridge of the nose (term?) that is often seen? I think I read somewhere (Wendy posted the piece about LH Weims?) that it is characteristic? What is the difference between that and a "down face", and is it strict, or can actually come in various degrees?
I am not sure it makes sense, let me know and I'll try to explain it better.
And thanks in advance, I really appreciate this opportunity to learn.

Me too. Though having said that, I have seen a lot of heavy heads recently complete with lots of loose skin around the neck, pendulous flews and baggy eyes. My friend who is not into dogs at all hit the nail on the head when she remarked that they looked like Bloodhounds.
